I had never heard of brindle horses before I began writing Riding Lessons. I needed a coat color that was truly unusual, and my search led me to the Brindle Horse Web site.
At right are the two horses that inspired the horses in my book. I envisioned the all-over striping of FRS Reckless Dan, and the white-on-dark brindling of Catch a Bird. If you want to see more pictures of brindled horses, there's a super slideshow at the Brindle Horse Web site.
I am also indebted to Anita Garza, who maintains a registry for brindle horses called the Brindle and Striped Equine International. Anita answered my many questions about this most unusual coat color when I was still in the research stage.
